| At the ceremony, Missouri author Barri Bumgartner congratulated the student winners and provided advice about continuing to be successful writers. Then, students announced their winning pieces and introduced their teachers. Contest winners received a copy of Scholastic’s Best Teen Writing of 2008, an autographed copy of a book by Chris Crutcher, and a certificate and/or pins of award for Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention. | 2009 Greef Awards The Robert J. Greef Award is given annually to outstanding seniors from colleges and universities in the state of Missouri. The criteria for the award include academic excellence in the field of English education, leadership, character and participation in department activities. The award was established in honor of a former MATE president, Robert Greef, who was an outstanding teacher at the University of Central Missouri. The Robert J. | Peter Hasselriis Leadership Award In 2009 the MATE Board established and presented the Peter Hasselriis Leadership Award to dedicated and long-time board member, Peter Hasselriis. The award, given for outstanding leadership and service to English education, was presented at the 2009 Write to Learn Conference. Pete has been the driving force in MATE since joining the organization in 1971. Pete was a professor of education at the University of Missouri – Columbia from 1968 – 1997. His love of teaching and devotion to the profession carried over to MATE. Throughout the years Pete held each office on the MATE Board and served multiple terms as the editor of the FYI Newsletter. Most recently, Pete established and maintained the MATE ListServ while continuing his role as membership chair during his retirement. MATE has remained an active organization due to Peter Hasselriis’ leadership, dedication and commitment. |
